The Background Story
And it just makes sense to host this new food offer at Overland Trail Cafe, named after one of the main roads linking the East and West of the United States. Walt Disney Imagineering Paris and Doritos® teams have imagined a brand-new character to enrich the story of Frontierland®: the owner of Overland Trail Cafe, a stagecoach mail carrier with a fiery nature and a curious mind.
It was during one of her trips along the frontier that she met a gold prospector who shared his meal with her: a simple but delicious snack of crispy, triangular corn chips. Delighted by this culinary find, she stocked up on the crisps, but on the road, these corn chips got mixed up with the goods that she was carrying... Initially disappointed, she quickly realized that the combination of flavours was in fact tasty and began selling her innovative creations to the inhabitants of Thunder Mesa: the Doritos® Loaded recipes were born.
To strengthen this story, many teams were involved, as several decorative elements, entirely developed and manufactured in the Central Workshops of Disneyland Paris, were added to the exterior and interior of Overland Trail Cafe: carpenters, painters, prop makers and printers supported this project to bring to life the vision and creative intention of the Imagineering and Doritos® teams.
David Goebel, Lead Concept Designer at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris, explains: “We took great care in weaving our new character’s story into the rich mythology of Frontierland. As a larger-than-life trailblazer, she fits right into the colourful cast of characters who inhabit Thunder Mesa. As always, it was a true joy collaborating with the many talented artisans, craftspeople, and experts of all kinds who work behind the scenes at Disneyland Paris.”
While this new character is based on real-life people such as Mary Fields, Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane, the Imagineers were also inspired by the many 19th-century dime novels featuring strong female heroines.
On the wooden billboard outside Overland Trail Cafe, guests will find a map illustrating the stagecoach driver’s travels, a dime novel cover dedicated to her adventures, as well as mentions to the transportation company Thunder Mesa Express. Inside the Overland Trail Cafe, it will also be possible to see photos of the owner with the inhabitants of Thunder Mesa, and especially Ol’ Klondike, the famous gold prospector who first introduced her to Doritos®!
