Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) is setting new standards in sustainability with the completion of Hong Kong’s first and largest car park solar canopy. Located in the Cast Member parking area, the first phase of this pioneering project features nearly 200 bi-facial solar panels, providing both renewable energy and much-needed shade for 40 parking spaces. This marks a major step in HKDL’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and clean energy innovation.
A Game-Changer in Renewable Energy
What makes this initiative truly groundbreaking is HKDL’s debut use of bi-facial solar panels, which can generate electricity from both sides. Unlike conventional panels that capture sunlight from only one surface, these advanced panels absorb both direct sunlight and light reflected from the ground, enhancing energy output by approximately 10%. This cutting-edge approach allows HKDL to maximize its clean energy production efficiently.
Expanding the Vision
The solar canopy project is set to grow even further. The second phase of construction, commencing soon, will expand the total energy capacity to 200 kilowatts, incorporating close to 400 bi-facial solar panels. Once completed, the system will generate over 200,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, equivalent to powering around 1,200 three-person households for a year. This project also provides shelter for 80 parking spaces.
By the end of 2025, HKDL’s solar network will include more than 8,300 panels spanning 60 different locations throughout the resort, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable energy within Hong Kong.
A Celebration of Progress
The first phase of the project was recently completed and celebrated with an event featuring Mickey Mouse, alongside key resort leaders, including Tim Sypko, Senior Vice President, Operations; CW Foo, Director of Facility Services; and HKDL Ambassador Gisele Abejero. Their presence underscored the significance of this initiative in the resort’s broader sustainability mission.
“At HKDL, we are not only committed to creating magical experiences, but also to reducing our environmental impact,” said Sypko. “We are always looking for ways to innovate and incorporate sustainable practices into our operations. We are proud to be a leader in environmental sustainability in the community, and the completion of Hong Kong's first and largest car park solar canopy project is a testament to that. These collective efforts are part of Disney Planet Possible – tangible actions Disney is taking to put possibility into practice and inspire optimism for a brighter, more sustainable future,” Sypko said.
Driving Green Transportation
Beyond solar power, HKDL is also actively promoting sustainable transportation. The resort has installed over 130 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, encouraging guests and cast members to adopt greener commuting options. This aligns with HKDL’s broader vision to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to Hong Kong’s environmental goals.
Recognized for Sustainability Leadership
HKDL’s commitment to sustainability has earned prestigious accolades, including honors at the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence 2023, The Second KPMG ESG 50 Awards 2024, and the Outstanding ESG Enterprises Recognition Scheme 2024. These awards recognize the resort’s ongoing efforts in areas such as food donation, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and water conservation.
