Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) has collaborated with Heep Hong Society to launch the first-ever social adaptation training program designed for children with special educational needs (SEN), aiming to foster diversity in the community, creating magical and inclusive experiences for children with special needs, developing their personal growth and self-confidence, enabling them to actively participate in the community, as well as spreading the Disney magic of inclusion to the community. This one-year pilot program marks the first collaboration between HKDL and a non-profit organization, providing the first and largest real-life social adaptation training program for SEN children within the park.
The program aims to provide unique experiences for SEN children to enjoy with their families while promoting their personal growth and self-confidence. Through appropriate activities and training, children have the opportunity to learn social etiquette, communication skills, establish correct behavioral patterns, and enhance their perception experience, cognitive ability, social skills, language comprehension, and expression skills.
The monthly training activities are accompanied by Disney VoluntEARS and social workers from Heep Hong Society, creating a safe, happy, and one-stop training environment for children to learn and grow. This one-year pilot program consists of 12 monthly sessions. Each session will accommodate approximately 25 families of children with special needs. Additionally, the training provides parents with the confidence to participate in outdoor activities with their children, further enhancing their discipline skills. During the program at HKDL, Disney VoluntEARS (DV) will accompany the children to explore various facilities, encouraging them to engage in activities including drawing of Disney friends at Animation Academy, shopping and paying in the merchandise store, ordering in the restaurants.
Shared Vision of Encouraging Diversity and InclusionExclusive Disney Experiences Offered
As the first and largest real-life social adaptation training program in Hong Kong, Keith Chau, Chairman of Disney VoluntEARS Leadership Council, shared that this program encompasses unique Disney experiences such as drawing Disney characters at the Animation Academy and guest experiences in the park's dining and merchandise venues. With the assistance of Disney VoluntEARS, we are committed to providing a safe, happy, and all-encompassing training environment for children with special needs.
To better understand SEN children and improve communication ahead of the program launch, DV invited Heep Hong to provide trainings to teach the skills of communicating with SEN children. In addition, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Ambassadors specially invited an applied behavioral therapist to share stories and experiences of taking care for this group of children. The training helps cast members to equip themselves with advance techniques to support the social adaptation training and daily operation, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment
HKDL also sponsored the rehabilitation of sensory rooms in 2 Heep Hong’s centers by purchasing different new equipment. The children-focus sensory rooms facilitates SEN children’s sensory processing and sensory integration, enhancing their functional performance.
Through this program, HKDL and Heep Hong Society are committed to helping SEN children integrate into community life, improving their quality of life and social skills.
