(Disney Magical Kingdom Blog - August 21, 2019) In
recent months, The Walt Disney Company has been seeking for 50% co-financing
arrangement between the Sony and Marvel Studios for future Spider-Man
films. Both stakeholders refused to give
ground and ended with letting Spider-Man franchise out of Marvel Studios.
As
the Sony Pictures official statement stated, "Much of today’s news about
Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s
involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s
decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live-action
Spider-Man film.". This exemplifies the following consequences:
1.) Tom
Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man, at this stage, would NOT be a part of the
Marvel Cinematic Universe movie (not a part of Marvel Studio’s Spider-Man:
Homecoming; Spider-Man: Far From Home universe)
2.)
Marvel Studio will NOT produce any further Spider-Man film for now
3.)
Sony Pictures CANNOT include the costume design, MCU characters (e.g. Nick
Fury, MJ, Ned) in their upcoming Spider-Man standalone
4.)
Disney XD's TV shows "Marvel's Spider-Man: Maximum Venom" will be
affected
5.)
Marvel might reduce the advertising in Spider-Man related merchandise
6.) Video game licenses "Marvel's Spider-Man" on Playstation 4 might be affected as the game is part of the marketing campaign for the Spider-Man franchise (this might hinder the project development, even though it is determined by Sony Interactive Entertainment, not Sony Pictures)
Deadline reported that there was no progression in reaching new terms between Sony
Pictures and The Walt Disney Company, which resulted in making this announcement.
Sony
Pictures also stated, "We hope this might change in the future, but
understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him –
including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him
to work on IP they do not own".
The
fact that Disney acquires the 20th
Century's properties does not contribute to this decision. Back in 2018 mid, Disney officially initialed the
buyout negotiations. With a $71.3
million agreement, all 20th Century's franchise ranging from X-Men and
Fantastic Four, Avatar to The Simpsons, are parts of Disney's properties. Other intellectual properties and a handful
of movie studios and television channels are now managed by The Walt Disney
Company.
As
Kelvin Feige mentioned that the involvement of Fantastic Four and X-Men will be
surfaced at least 4 to 5 years. Kelvin
Feige has been discussing for months to come to an agreement. Despite the partnership has to be ended as
well as his involvement, Kelvin Feige has plans for Spider-Man in Phase 4,
which shows no evidence of diminishing Spider-Man's role.
Jeremy Renner (MCU's Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye in Avengers: Endgame and upcoming
Disney+ "hawkeye") invoked the name of Stan Lee on Twitter to suggest
Sony to resolve the dispute.
Spider-Man:
Far From Home made over $1 billion at the box office and became Sony’s top-grossing
film ever. It was no surprise when it
came to a popular and beloved webhead. This
Spider-Man incarnation was introduced in 2016 Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man:
Homecoming grossed $880 million worldwide in the following year.
This
news not only is overwhelming for a lot of fans, but also the audience in the theatre. When Spidey is not around in
the MCU with his friends, and neglect the history of building the sinister
six. No matter how far Spidey will go in
the future, the franchise will certainly receive a huge impact from the
fanbase. Stay tuned for any update.
Spider-Man:
Far From Home, directed by Jon Watts is the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe
film as the closure of Phase 3. Other
exciting Marvel Studios projects include Black Widow (May 1, 2020), and The
Eternals (November 6, 2020) will hit theatre next year. In 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten
Rings (February 12, 2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 7,
2021) and Thor: Love and Thunder (November 5, 2021) will be coming in the
following year.
Disney+
series: The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2020), WandaVision (2021), Loki
(2021), What If? (2021) and Hawkeye (2021)
