Tonight, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) will officially kick off its year-long 10th anniversary at an in-park ceremony. To honor this milestone, the resort has planned a brand new, year-long “Happily Ever After” celebration with an amazing array of new entertainment for guests to enjoy starting in mid-November.
An all-new stage show, “Mickey and the Wondrous Book,” will open at Disney’s Storybook Theater on November 17. This 25-minute concert-style stage show celebrates some of Disney’s most loved characters and stories. Guests follow Mickey Mouse and Goofy on a quest with the friendly, warm-hug-loving snowman Olaf from the popular movie “Frozen.” Together, they’ll journey inside an enchanted book packed with seven beloved Disney tales with universal appeal: “Jungle Book,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Tangled,” “Brave,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess and the Frog” and finally, “Frozen.”
“Mickey and the Wondrous Book” culminates in an original song entitled “Happily Ever After,” which is also the resort’s 10th anniversary theme song. The show features 22 original costume designs and many beloved Disney characters on stage.
At night, guests will be dazzled by an enhanced “Disney in the Stars” Fireworks show, made even more vibrant by cutting-edge technology, lighting effects and state-of-the-art video projection shown on Sleeping Beauty Castle. A preview of the street-to-sky display will take place tonight and tomorrow as part of the resort’s birthday celebration. The enhanced fireworks show will officially launch in November.
Disney Characters will join in the celebration dressed in their colorful 10th anniversary costumes. Guests may also enjoy the “Happily Ever After” storybook photo spot, plus special merchandise, food and beverage and other surprises throughout the year.
New attraction: Fairy Tale Forest
Also being announced today is a new attraction coming to Fantasyland in December. Fairy Tale Forest will let guests walk through a winding, living storybook realm based on Disney fairy tales. Using creative landscaping, these whimsical passages will feature miniature scenes from “Tangled,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Cinderella” and “The Little Mermaid.” The forest will also be home to Tinker Bell where she will greet guests in Pixie Hollow.
Seasonal events for Halloween and Christmas
In addition to the new shows and attractions, there will be seasonal offerings for Halloween and Christmas. In October, the frightful fun of Disney Haunted Halloween will span outdoors to the ghostly lands of Mystic Point, Grizzly Gulch, and Adventureland, which dares the boldest not to lose their soul to sinister spirits. The popular Disney Sparkling Christmas will be back in mid-November where Queen Elsa and Princess Anna will light up the Christmas tree adorning Main Street, U.S.A.
Expansion continues
“With the launch of the year-long 10th anniversary celebration and Christmas offerings, the resort will increase marketing and sales efforts in 20 countries and cities in Asia,” said HKDL Managing Director Andrew Kam. “These efforts will further expand our markets and contribute to the city’s ability to attract tourists from across the globe.”
Along with expanding the markets it serves, HKDL will continue to enhance its entertainment and offerings with several projects in the pipeline. Following its successful topping out in August, the Iron Man Experience is scheduled to open in late 2016 inside a Marvel-themed area in Tomorrowland. This will be the first Marvel-themed attraction in a Disney park where guests will fight alongside Iron Man in an epic adventure across Hong Kong. The overall area will also feature a Marvel-themed merchandise store and a character greeting experience where guests can take photos.
When it opens in early 2017, Disney Explorers Lodge will bring guests into a world of exploration and exotic cultures. The 750-room hotel will feature four sections based on an African savannah, a South American rainforest, a Polynesian island paradise and an area inspired by the natural beauty of Asia. HKDL’s third hotel will also boast three new themed restaurants, a shop and a themed outdoor swimming pool.
HKDL’s two shareholders, TWDC and the Hong Kong Government are also in discussions on the resort’s Phase 2 development.
Growing with Hong Kong
Since 2013, HKDL has grown about 25 per cent in size. The continued expansion has boosted the cumulative attendance to more than 50 million guests since the resort’s opening in September 2005. In this period, the value added generated from the additional spending in Hong Kong by HKDL visitors totaled HK$65.1 billion, equivalent to 0.37% of Hong Kong’s GDP. HKDL has been a magnet for family visitors. Since the opening of HKDL, the number of family tourists visiting Hong Kong rose about 140 per cent from 1.8 million to 4.3 million by the end of 2014.
Economic contributions aside, the resort has expanded its corporate citizenship efforts to make lasting, positive changes in Hong Kong. HKDL has also regularly been named a marketing and sales partner of choice and a leading employer thanks to its strong brand power and efforts to empower, nurture and satisfy its cast members as they build their careers.
HKDL is proud to call Hong Kong home. As a dedicated member of the local community, the resort cares deeply about promoting societal well-being through initiatives that inspire happiness and imagination. Since opening a decade ago, the resort has donated 50,000 hours of time and talent through its Disney VoluntEARS team, and partnered with NGOs in welcoming hundreds of thousands of underprivileged community members to the park through the Community Involvement Program scheme.
The resort has been continuously offering the “Disney Scholarship” in support of students from tertiary institutions. Since 2007, over 370 students from Hospitality, F&B, Hotel Management, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, as well as the Performing Arts, have benefited from an accumulated amount of over HK$4,800,000 in scholarships. In addition, HKDL provides internships, industry attachments and various career opportunities to the awardees as they continue to pursue their dreams.
In view of the international boom in the theme park industry, HKDL also collaborated with the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education at OUHK to offer a Higher Diploma in Resort and Theme Park Management starting in 2015. It is a first-of-its-kind course focused on theme parks to nurture talents in the industry and meet growing demands, with the aim of enhancing the standard of service in Hong Kong’s tourism industry and its competitiveness as an international destination.
Looking ahead, the resort will continue to strengthen its position as a leading entertainment destination in Asia, a regional employer of choice, and a pioneer in the theme park industry.
